And if you’re wondering why a small rural community has so much school spirit, well… you clearly haven’t met the Cartwright Cougars yet.

Cartwright School and the Community

For a small Manitoba community, a school is about much more than classrooms.

Cartwright School MB serves as an important gathering point for local families and helps connect education with the broader community. The Municipality of Cartwright-Roblin identifies Cartwright School as part of the Prairie Spirit School Division and lists it among the community’s education resources. Cartwright-Roblin

That connection between school and community is particularly noticeable in smaller rural communities, where school activities, sports and events can become an important part of community life.

The school’s current location at 810 Broadway Street places it right in the heart of Cartwright.

Cartwright School History

The Cartwright School history goes back well beyond the current building.

Historical information about education in the community is preserved through local heritage resources, including the Cartwright School Museum at Heritage Park. The museum is part of the collection of historic buildings that help tell the story of education and everyday life in the Cartwright area.

The school’s history also demonstrates how strongly the community has supported local education over the years.

In fact, one particularly interesting chapter occurred in 1991, when the school board planned to remove Grades 10, 11 and 12 from Cartwright School and send high-school students to another community. According to the Cartwright-Roblin Community Development Corporation, local residents opposed the proposal and held community meetings before ultimately establishing the Cartwright Community Independent School Inc. to maintain secondary education locally. That community effort eventually resulted in the independent school continuing to operate alongside the Prairie Spirit program in the same building. The Manitoba Federation of Independent Schools currently lists Cartwright Community Independent School as a non-faith-based school offering Grade 12 in Cartwright. MFIS

That’s a pretty good example of what community involvement can look like in a small Manitoba town.

Cartwright Cougars

Of course, you can’t talk about Cartwright School Manitoba without talking about the Cartwright Cougars.

The Cougars represent the school in athletics and are an important part of school spirit. Sports provide students with opportunities to compete, work together and represent their school and community.

The Cougars also give the school a recognizable identity beyond the classroom.

Whether it’s a volleyball court, basketball court, track, soccer field or another school activity, the Cougar name is closely connected with Cartwright School athletics.

And let’s be honest: every small town needs a mascot that looks like it could chase you across a prairie field.

Cartwright School Sports

School sports are an important part of student life at Cartwright School MB.

Athletics provide opportunities for students to develop teamwork, discipline and leadership while representing their school. Cartwright students have participated in inter-school athletic activities through Prairie Spirit School Division and regional competitions.

Historical Manitoba records also document Cartwright School participating in provincial school activities. For example, a Manitoba Forestry Association report from 2015 lists Cartwright School among the participating schools in its regional competition. Think Trees

Sports are therefore not simply an after-school activity. For many students, they become part of the memories and experiences associated with their school years.

A Small School With a Big Community

One interesting thing about Cartwright School Manitoba is the size of the school.

Manitoba’s September 2024 enrolment report recorded 77 students at Cartwright School. Province of Manitoba

That is small compared with many urban Manitoba schools, but smaller enrolment can create a very different school environment. Students may see many of the same people at school, community activities and sporting events.

And when your school has a population of roughly 77 students, getting picked last for a team probably becomes a considerably more complicated process.

Cartwright School Today

Cartwright School continues to serve the local community as part of Prairie Spirit School Division.

The school’s role extends beyond education. It is connected with local families, community activities and the athletic programs represented by the Cartwright Cougars.

For anyone researching Cartwright School MB, the school provides an interesting example of how education, athletics and community identity can overlap in a small Manitoba community.
